The Language of Suffering

At the core of the ACES framework is a recognition of the impact of childhood suffering.  How does the language of ‘adverse childhood experiences’ sit alongside other terminology, such as trauma, attachment, PTSD, adversity and developmental trauma?  Where are the overlaps and where are the differences?  Does that matter?  Our two guests will help us explore this contested territory.  Lisa Cherry is a trauma specialist, who hosts the well-regarded Trauma/Resonance/Resilience Podcast Series and whose new book, on the conversations that make a difference for those working on the frontline with children and young people, is due out in 2021.  Joan Smith is a journalist and Chair of The Mayor of London’s Violence Against Women and Girls Board.  Her 2019 book, Home Grown, examines the unacknowledged roots of domestic terrorism, which too often reside in domestic violence.   Please join us for this conversation on the power and substance of language.
